If your Morphy Richards MRX Complete Pro Wet & Dry Hard Floor Cleaner smells stale or musty, check the dirty water tank, roller and filters.
Dirty water, trapped debris and components stored while damp can develop unpleasant smells. Cleaning and drying the removable parts can help prevent odours between uses.
Applies to: MRX Complete Pro Wet & Dry Hard Floor Cleaner, model 740002. Check the rating label on your appliance to confirm the model.
Is the smell burning or electrical?
If you notice a burning or electrical smell, smoke or excessive heat, stop using the cleaner.
Switch it off and disconnect the power supply if safe to do so. Do not use or charge it again until you have received advice from our Customer Support team.
Do not run the cleaner again to locate the smell or recreate the issue for a video.
The cleaning checks below are for stale or musty odours, rather than suspected electrical problems.
Before cleaning
Switch the cleaner off and disconnect it from the charger before removing components or inspecting for debris.
Do not immerse the cleaner body, cleaning head, charger or electrical parts in water. Only rinse the removable parts described below.
Do not use solvents, abrasive materials, hard brushes or metallic or sharp cleaning tools.
1. Empty and clean the dirty water tank
- Remove the dirty water tank.
- Remove the lid and filter assembly.
- Empty the tank and rinse it thoroughly with warm water.
- Use the supplied cleaning brush to remove dirt, film and deposits from inside the tank.
- Clean the lid and remove debris around the float.
- Check that the float moves freely.
- Wipe the tank surfaces dry.
Empty the dirty water tank after every cleaning session, even if it has not reached the MAX mark. Do not leave dirty water inside between uses.
2. Wash and dry the roller and cover
The roller can retain dirt, hair and cleaning residue.
- With the cleaner upright and the cleaning head facing you, remove the roller cover using its release lever.
- Lift the lever at the left-hand end of the roller and remove it.
- Clear hair, threads and debris, including around the roller ends.
- Wash the removed roller and cover under running water.
- Allow them to air-dry in a well-ventilated place before storage.
Allow the roller to dry before refitting if the cleaner will not be used immediately. Do not enclose a damp roller beneath its cover for storage.
Keep drying parts away from direct heat and direct sunlight.
3. Clean and fully dry the filters
- Remove debris from the mesh filter and rinse it with clean water.
- Remove the sponge filter from its holder.
- Clear trapped dirt and rinse the sponge filter thoroughly.
- Allow the sponge filter to dry fully before refitting.
A damp or dirty filter can contribute to musty smells.
Never operate the cleaner without its filters installed. If a filter is damaged or still smells unpleasant after thorough cleaning and drying, contact Customer Support for advice.
4. Remove accessible trapped debris
Inspect the roller compartment, accessible suction inlet and elbow connection behind the cleaning head.
- Gently remove accessible debris using the supplied cleaning brush where it can reach.
- Wipe accessible surfaces with a damp cloth.
- Check that no visible debris remains before reassembly.
Do not pour water into the cleaning head, force tools into openings, push debris further inside or dismantle the suction pathway.
If a blockage is out of reach, contact Customer Support.
5. Empty and rinse the clean water tank
- Remove the clean water tank and open its cap.
- Empty any remaining water or cleaning solution.
- Rinse the inside with clean water. Do not use hot water.
- Wipe the outside dry and allow the tank to dry before storage.
Avoid leaving mixed cleaning solution in the tank between uses. When you next clean, use fresh water and correctly measured cleaning solution as directed in the manual.
6. Clean the storage base
Water and residue can collect on the storage base after cleaning or self-cleaning.
- Remove the switched-off cleaner from the base.
- Wipe away water and residue.
- Dry the base and check that the surface underneath is clean and dry.
Store the cleaner upright on its base in a dry location, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
Does self-cleaning prevent smells?
Self-cleaning helps with routine roller care, but it does not replace emptying the dirty water tank, removing trapped debris or drying the removable parts.
After a self-clean cycle:
- Empty and rinse the dirty water tank.
- Inspect the roller and cover for remaining dirt.
- Check and clean the filters.
- Allow the sponge filter to dry fully before refitting.
- Allow the roller to dry before storage.
Find “How to use the self-clean function” and “How to clean the roller, tanks and filters” in our MRX Complete Pro 740002 support hub.
Can I add something to remove the smell?
Do not add perfume, essential oils, bleach, disinfectant or household cleaning mixtures to the tanks to mask an odour.
Use only cleaning solution suitable under the manual’s guidance and follow the detergent manufacturer’s dosing instructions. Adding extra detergent can leave residue and produce excessive foam.
Clean and dry the affected components rather than trying to cover up the smell.
How can I prevent smells returning?
After each cleaning session:
- Empty and rinse the dirty water tank.
- Clean the roller and cover.
- Check the filters and accessible inlet for debris.
- Empty leftover water or solution before storage.
- Allow cleaned removable parts to dry.
- Make sure the sponge filter is fully dry before refitting.
- Keep the storage base clean and dry.
Before the next use, check that all components are correctly reassembled and securely fitted.
