If your Morphy Richards MRX Complete Pro Wet & Dry Hard Floor Cleaner (model 740002) smells unpleasant, start by checking the dirty water tank, roller and filters.
Dirty water, trapped debris and components stored while damp can develop stale or musty smells. Thorough cleaning and drying can help keep your cleaner fresh between uses.
If the smell is burning or electrical rather than stale or musty, switch the cleaner off, disconnect the charger and contact our Customer Support team. Do not use or charge it again until you have received advice.
1. Empty and clean the dirty water tank
Switch the cleaner off and disconnect it from the charger before removing components.
- Remove the dirty water tank, lid and filter assembly.
- Empty the tank and rinse it thoroughly with warm water.
- Use the supplied cleaning brush to remove dirt and deposits from inside the tank.
- Clean the lid and remove any debris around the float.
- Wipe the tank surfaces dry.
Empty the dirty water tank after every cleaning session. Avoid leaving dirty water inside between uses, even if the tank is not full.
2. Wash the roller and roller cover
The roller can hold dirt, hair and cleaning residue, which may cause an unpleasant smell.
- Remove the roller and cover following the user manual.
- Clear hair, threads and trapped debris, including around the roller ends.
- Wash the roller and cover under running water.
- Allow them to dry in a well-ventilated area before storage.
Do not store the cleaner with a damp roller enclosed under its cover. Allow the roller to dry before refitting when the cleaner will not be used immediately.
3. Clean and fully dry the filters
Remove debris from the mesh and sponge filters, then rinse them thoroughly with clean water.
Allow the sponge filter to dry fully before refitting. A damp or dirty filter can contribute to musty smells.
Do not operate the cleaner with its filters removed. If a filter is damaged or remains unpleasant-smelling after cleaning and drying, contact us for advice.
4. Check for trapped debris
Inspect the accessible roller compartment, suction inlet and elbow connection behind the cleaning head.
Remove accessible debris gently using the supplied cleaning brush where it can reach. Wipe accessible surfaces with a damp cloth.
Do not pour water into the cleaning head, force tools into openings or dismantle the suction pathway. Contact us if a blockage is out of reach.
5. Empty and rinse the clean water tank
Empty any remaining water or cleaning solution and rinse the tank with clean water. Do not use hot water.
Avoid leaving mixed cleaning solution in the tank during storage. Refill it with fresh water and correctly measured cleaning solution when you next use the cleaner.
6. Clean the storage base
Water and residue can collect on the storage base after cleaning or self-cleaning.
Wipe the base clean and dry it before returning the cleaner to it. Check that the area underneath the base is also clean and dry.
7. Use self-cleaning as part of your care routine
The self-clean function helps with routine roller care, but it does not replace emptying the dirty water tank, removing trapped debris or drying the removable parts.
After the cycle:
- Empty and rinse the dirty water tank.
- Inspect the roller and cover for remaining dirt.
- Clean the filters as needed.
- Allow cleaned components to dry before storage.
See our guides: How to use the self-clean function and How to clean the roller, tanks and filters.
Avoid masking the smell with other products
Do not add perfume, essential oils, bleach, disinfectant or household cleaning mixtures to the tanks to remove an odour.
Use cleaning solution as directed in the user manual and follow its dosing instructions. Excessive solution can leave residue and create foam.
How to prevent smells returning
After each cleaning session:
- Empty the dirty water tank.
- Clean the roller and cover.
- Check the filters and accessible inlet for debris.
- Empty leftover water or solution before storage.
- Allow cleaned parts to dry.
- Store the cleaner upright on its base in a dry location, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
