Using the recommended water mixture in your Morphy Richards Power 2400W SteamElite Plus Steam Generator (model 332013) helps reduce limescale buildup and maintain the appliance's performance.
The SteamElite Plus has specific water requirements, so it's important to use the correct mixture and avoid adding unsuitable substances to the water tank.
This guide explains which water to use, what to avoid and how to look after your steam generator.
1. What Water Should I Use?
For the SteamElite Plus 332013, Morphy Richards recommends:
- 50% tap water
- 50% deionised, distilled or demineralised water
This is a 50/50 mixture of ordinary tap water and one of the recommended treated water types.
For example, to prepare 1 litre of water:
- Add 500ml of tap water.
- Add 500ml of deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
Important: Never use more than 50% deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
You can usually find these water types in larger supermarkets or automotive sections.
2. Why Is a 50/50 Water Mixture Recommended?
Tap water naturally contains minerals, including calcium and magnesium.
When water is heated, these minerals can form limescale deposits within the appliance.
Mixing tap water with deionised, distilled or demineralised water reduces the overall mineral content compared with using tap water alone.
This provides additional protection against limescale buildup within the steam generator.
The manufacturer specifically recommends the 50/50 mixture for model 332013.
Using the recommended water helps with maintenance, but it doesn't guarantee that limescale or other steam-related issues will never occur.
3. Can I Use Only Tap Water?
The manufacturer's recommended mixture is 50% tap water and 50% deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
Using tap water alone may introduce more minerals into the steam generator, particularly in areas with hard water.
Over time, mineral deposits can accumulate within appliances that heat water.
For additional protection against limescale, we recommend following the 50/50 mixture specified in your SteamElite Plus instructions.
4. Can I Use 100% Distilled or Deionised Water?
No. The SteamElite Plus 332013 instructions specifically state that you should never use more than 50% deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
This means you shouldn't fill the tank using only:
- Distilled water.
- Deionised water.
- Demineralised water.
Always mix the treated water with an equal amount of tap water.
5. What Water or Additives Should I Avoid?
The manufacturer advises against using the following in your SteamElite Plus:
- Scented water or ironing water.
- Water containing perfume or fragrance additives.
- Water containing starch or sugar.
- Vinegar or chemical descaling solutions.
- Water containing cleaning products or detergents.
- Battery topping-up fluid.
- Defrosted water collected from a refrigerator.
These substances aren't suitable for use in the steam generator and may leave unwanted residue or affect its operation.
Never add descaling chemicals, fragrances or cleaning solutions to the water tank.
If you're unsure whether a particular product is suitable, use the recommended 50/50 mixture instead.
6. Can I Use Filtered Water?
The SteamElite Plus 332013 instructions specify a mixture of tap water and deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
They don't specifically recommend household filtered water as a substitute.
Different water filters remove different substances, and filtered water isn't necessarily the same as deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
For this model, we recommend following the manufacturer's specified 50/50 mixture rather than substituting another water type.
7. How Do I Fill the Water Tank?
The SteamElite Plus has a detachable water tank with separate clean and dirty water chambers.
What to Do
- Place the iron safely on its rest and release the steam trigger.
- Remove the detachable water tank using the water tank release button.
- Open the filling cap on the clean water chamber.
- Fill with the recommended 50/50 water mixture.
- Do not exceed the MAX filling line.
- Close the filling cap and securely refit the tank.
Never fill the dirty water chamber.
If the low-water warning light is illuminated, refill the clean water chamber to restore the water supply for steam production.

8. Does the Correct Water Mixture Replace Descaling?
No. Even when using the recommended water mixture, mineral deposits can still develop over time.
The SteamElite Plus has an automatic cleaning system to help remove deposits from its internal boiler.
How Auto Clean Works
After approximately 5 litres of water have been used, the appliance will initiate an automatic cleaning cycle when it has cooled completely and is next switched on.
During this process:
- The descaling indicator flashes.
- Water is used to flush the internal boiler.
- Used water and mineral deposits collect in the dirty water chamber.
- Steam ironing is temporarily unavailable.
- The cycle takes approximately 3 minutes.
Once the cycle has finished, the appliance prepares for normal steam ironing.
Auto Clean operates automatically. You cannot manually start it or select how frequently it runs.
After each completed Auto Clean cycle, allow the appliance and collected water to cool completely before emptying the dirty water chamber.

9. Can the Wrong Water Cause Brown Water, Dripping or Steam Problems?
Water quality and mineral deposits can sometimes contribute to residue or changes in appliance performance.
However, brown water, dripping, leaks and interrupted steam can have different causes.
Using an unsuitable water type doesn't automatically explain every symptom or establish that the appliance is faulty.
If you're experiencing a specific problem, follow the relevant troubleshooting guide:

- Water dripping from the soleplate: SteamElite Plus (332013) – Water Dripping or Pouring from the Soleplate

These guides will help you check the symptoms and determine whether further assistance is required.
10. How Should I Empty and Store My SteamElite Plus?
After ironing:
- Switch off the appliance and unplug it from the mains.
- Allow it to cool completely.
- Remove the detachable water tank.
- Open the filling cap and empty the remaining water from the clean water chamber.
- If Auto Clean has completed, empty the dirty water chamber through its designated emptying holes once the collected water is completely cool.
- Refit the water tank and store the appliance according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Emptying the tank after use is part of the manufacturer's storage guidance.
