If your Morphy Richards Power 2400W SteamElite Plus Steam Generator (model 332013) is leaking water from the removable water tank, base unit or steam supply hose, this guide will help you identify where the water is escaping and what to check safely.
Water leaking from the appliance itself is different from occasional small droplets released through the iron's soleplate during steam ironing.
If water is escaping from the base, electrical components, steam hose or its connections, stop using the appliance, switch it off and unplug it if safe to do so.
Do not continue operating an appliance that is visibly leaking.
1. Identify Where the Water Is Coming From
Before carrying out any checks, establish where the water appears.
Possible locations include:
- The detachable water tank.
- The water tank filling cap.
- The area where the water tank fits into the base.
- The underside or casing of the base unit.
- The steam supply hose.
- The connection between the steam hose and the iron or base.
- The dirty water chamber after an automatic cleaning cycle.
If the water is coming through the holes in the iron's soleplate, use our separate guide:
SteamElite Plus (332013) – Water Dripping or Pouring from the Soleplate
Safety first: Switch off, unplug if safe, and allow the appliance to cool completely before inspecting any accessible parts. Do not dismantle the appliance.
2. Check the Detachable Water Tank
The SteamElite Plus has a removable water tank with a clean water chamber and a separate dirty water chamber.
If water appears around the tank or the area where it fits into the base, check the following.
What to Do
- Make sure the appliance is switched off, unplugged and completely cool.
- Remove the detachable water tank using the water tank release button.
- Check that the filling cap is properly closed.
- Check that the clean water chamber hasn't been filled above the MAX line.
- Look for visible cracks, damage or distortion to the tank.
- Check for obvious debris around the accessible tank seating area.
- Refit the tank securely, ensuring it sits correctly in position.
If the tank is visibly cracked or damaged, do not continue using it.
Important: Filling above the MAX line may cause spillage, but it doesn't automatically explain leakage from the base casing or steam hose.
If water continues to escape despite the tank being correctly filled and fitted, further assessment may be required.
3. Check Whether the Water Is Coming from the Filling Cap
Water may escape around the filling cap if it hasn't been closed correctly or if the tank has been overfilled.
What to Check
- The filling cap is fully closed.
- There is no visible damage to the cap.
- The water level is below or at the MAX marking.
- The tank hasn't been tipped or positioned incorrectly.
Carry out these checks only when the appliance is switched off and cool.
If water continues escaping from the filling cap when correctly closed, do not attempt to modify or repair the cap yourself.
4. Check the Dirty Water Chamber After Auto Clean
The SteamElite Plus automatically cleans its internal boiler after approximately 5 litres of water have been used.
During Auto Clean, used water and mineral deposits are collected in the dirty water chamber within the removable water tank assembly.
The manual instructs customers to empty this chamber after each completed Auto Clean cycle to prevent overflow.
What to Do
- Allow the Auto Clean cycle to finish completely.
- Switch off the appliance when you've finished ironing.
- Unplug it from the mains.
- Allow the steam generator and dirty water to cool completely.
- Remove the detachable water tank.
- Empty the collected dirty water through the designated dirty water emptying holes.
- Refit the tank securely.
Never remove the water tank while Auto Clean is actively discharging hot water.
If water appears around the tank after cleaning, check whether the dirty water chamber has been emptied as instructed.
If the appliance continues leaking after the chamber has been emptied and the tank correctly fitted, further investigation may be necessary.

5. Check the Steam Hose and Connections
The steam supply hose carries hot steam between the base unit and the iron.
It may become hot during normal use.
However, water or steam escaping from a damaged hose or its connections is not normal.
What to Check
With the appliance unplugged and completely cool:
- Visually inspect the accessible length of the steam hose.
- Look for cracks, splits, kinks, exposed sections or other visible damage.
- Check whether there are signs of water escaping around either end of the hose.
- Look for damage where the hose enters the base or iron.
Do not pull, twist, disconnect or attempt to tighten the hose connections.
The steam hose is not a customer-serviceable connection.
If the hose or its connections appear damaged or are leaking, do not use the appliance until it has been assessed.
6. Water Leaking from Underneath the Base Unit
Water escaping from the underside or casing of the steam generator base should not be treated as normal operation.
The cause cannot reliably be determined through external troubleshooting alone.
If you notice water collecting beneath the base:
- Stop using the appliance.
- Switch it off and unplug it if safe.
- Allow it to cool completely.
- Check whether there is any obvious spillage from the detachable tank or filling cap.
- Check that the dirty water chamber has been emptied following a completed Auto Clean cycle.
Do not switch the appliance back on to reproduce the leak.
If there is no clear external spillage and water appears to be escaping from inside the base, the appliance requires further assessment.
Never open the base casing or attempt to inspect the internal boiler, pump or electrical components.
7. Does the Water Mixture Cause Leaks?
For the SteamElite Plus 332013, the recommended water mixture is:
- 50% tap water
- 50% deionised, distilled or demineralised water
Never use more than 50% deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
Do not use scented ironing water, perfume, starch, vinegar, chemical descalers or other additives.
The correct water mixture helps reduce mineral deposits and maintain steam performance.
However, using a different water mixture doesn't automatically explain water leaking from the base, tank or hose.
If there is a visible leak, the location and nature of the leak must be assessed.

What Water Should I Use in My SteamElite Plus?
8. When Might a Leak Require Further Investigation?
Further assessment is required if:
- Water continues escaping from the detachable tank despite the cap being closed and the tank being correctly fitted.
- The tank is visibly cracked or damaged.
- Water leaks from the underside or casing of the base unit.
- Water or steam escapes from the steam hose or its connections.
- Water continues leaking after the dirty water chamber has been emptied.
- The appliance leaks during normal operation without any identifiable external spillage.
Do not continue using an appliance with an unresolved external leak.
