If you notice a burning smell or smoke when using your Morphy Richards iron or steam generator, stop ironing so you can check what is happening.
A slight smell during initial use, burnt residue on the soleplate and smoke coming from the appliance require different action.
A slight smell when using a new iron
Some models may produce a slight odour during initial use as manufacturing residues heat up.
Check the “Before first use” section of your model’s user manual for what to expect and any preparation steps required.
Do not assume that a strong burning smell, an electrical smell or unexpected smoke is part of normal first use.
A burnt-fabric smell or residue on the soleplate
Fabric or product residue on the soleplate can create a burning smell when heated. This may happen if the temperature is too high for the garment, the iron touches a printed design, or deposits have built up on the surface.
Before checking or cleaning:
- Switch off and unplug the iron.
- Allow it to cool completely.
- Check the soleplate and garment for visible residue or scorching.
- Follow your model’s user manual for the approved soleplate-cleaning method.
Do not scrape the soleplate or use abrasive cleaners, metal pads or household remedies.
Before ironing the garment again, follow its manufacturer’s care label. If you lower the iron’s temperature setting, allow time for the soleplate to cool.

Smoke or an electrical burning smell
Stop using the appliance immediately if:
- Smoke comes from the iron’s body, steam-generator base, cable or plug.
- You notice an electrical or burning-plastic smell.
- There are sparks, melted areas or visible damage.
- The source of the smoke or burning smell is unclear.
Switch off and unplug the appliance if it is safe to do so. Do not switch it back on to test it, or attempt to dismantle or repair it.
Please contact our Customer Service team with:
- Your model number.
- Whether this happened during first use or after previous normal use.
- Where the smell or smoke appeared to come from.
- Any photos of visible residue or damage, taken once the appliance is unplugged and completely cool.
You do not need to recreate the issue or switch the appliance on to provide a video.
