If your Morphy Richards 1.8L Easy Steam Steam Generator Iron (333030) is releasing brown or discoloured water, leaving marks on clothing or ejecting residue from the soleplate, stop using it on clothing and follow the steps below.
This can happen when limescale, minerals or other deposits collect inside the steam system or on the soleplate.
1. Check the Water Tank
Switch off and unplug the appliance, then allow it to cool completely.
Once cool:
- Remove the detachable water tank.
- Empty any remaining water.
- Rinse the tank thoroughly with clean water.
- Check the inside of the tank for visible residue or discolouration.
- Refill it with fresh, suitable water up to the MAX line.
- Refit the tank securely.
Do not add vinegar, chemical descaler, detergent or any other cleaning product to the water tank.
2. Check the Water Being Used
The type of water used in the steam generator can affect its performance. Minerals, fragrances and other additives may collect inside the system and contribute to discoloured water, deposits or marks on clothing.

3. Complete the Calc Clean Cycle
If the Calc Clean indicator is flashing, or the appliance is releasing discoloured water or deposits, complete the Easy Steam Steam Generator Calc Clean cycle.
The Calc Clean cycle helps remove limescale and deposits from inside the steam system.
Only use the Calc Clean process described in the instruction manual. Never attempt to descale the steam generator using vinegar or a chemical descaling product.
4. Clean the Soleplate
Once the appliance is switched off, unplugged and completely cool, wipe the soleplate using a clean, damp cloth.
Do not use:
- Scouring powders
- Abrasive cleaning products
- Metal scourers
- Sharp cleaning tools
These could damage the soleplate coating.
If synthetic fibres have become stuck to the soleplate, follow the cleaning guidance in the instruction manual before using the iron again.
5. Test the Iron on an Old Towel
After completing the Calc Clean cycle and cleaning the soleplate:
- Refill the tank with fresh, suitable water.
- Switch on the steam generator.
- Set the temperature dial to two dots or above.
- Allow the appliance to heat fully.
- Wait until the selected ECO or High steam indicator remains steadily illuminated.
- Test the steam on an old, clean towel.
Continue testing away from clothing until the steam and water coming from the soleplate are clear and no further residue is released.
Still Releasing Brown Water or Leaving Marks?
Brown water, particles or residue are generally caused by limescale or deposits collected inside the steam system. This is normally a cleaning and maintenance issue rather than an indication that the appliance has developed a mechanical fault.
Where the build-up is heavy or there are stubborn deposits within the steam system, one Calc Clean cycle may not remove everything. The cleaning process may need to be repeated until the remaining deposits have been flushed out.
After completing each Calc Clean cycle:
- Switch off and unplug the appliance.
- Allow the iron and the water in the Calc Clean tray to cool completely.
- Empty and rinse the Calc Clean tray.
- Wipe the cooled soleplate with a clean, damp cloth.
- Refill the tank with fresh deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
- Repeat the full Easy Steam Steam Generator Calc Clean cycle if discoloured water or residue remains.
- Once the appliance has cooled, test the steam on an old, clean towel.
Repeat the cleaning process if necessary until the water runs clear and no further particles or residue are released.
Do not use the iron on clothing while discoloured water or deposits are coming through the soleplate, as this may cause staining.
To help prevent the issue from returning:
- Use deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
- Never add fragranced ironing water, starch, perfume, vinegar or chemical descaler to the water tank.
- Complete the Calc Clean cycle whenever the indicator flashes.
- Empty the water tank after use.
