If your Morphy Richards steam iron or steam generator spits, splutters or releases water droplets when using steam, a few simple checks may help.
Common causes include using steam before the appliance is ready, condensation in a steam generator’s hose, or mineral deposits inside the appliance.
The correct checks depend on your model. Always follow your appliance’s user manual for its steam settings, water requirements and maintenance instructions.
1. Allow the appliance to become ready
If you use steam before the appliance is ready, water may be released instead of steam.
- Steam irons with adjustable temperatures: check that the selected setting is suitable for steam, as indicated on the dial or in your manual.
- Steam generators: allow the appliance to complete its warm-up process and check the ready indicators before pressing the steam trigger.
- Cordless steam irons: return the iron to its base regularly to maintain the heat needed for steam.
Always follow the garment manufacturer’s care label. Do not increase the temperature beyond what the garment permits just to use steam.
2. Follow the instructions for starting steam
On some steam generators, steam can cool and condense into water inside the hose between uses. This may cause a brief release of droplets when steam is next activated.
Check your model’s manual for any instructions on clearing initial condensation before ironing. Keep the soleplate and steam directed away from yourself and others.
For irons with a steam-boost function, allow the recommended interval between presses. Repeatedly pressing the button may affect steam performance.
3. Check the water level
An overfilled tank can contribute to water escaping from the appliance.
- Check that the water level does not exceed the MAX mark.
- Follow your manual’s filling instructions.
- If your model has a removable tank, make sure it is correctly fitted.
- Check that any filling cover is properly closed, where applicable.
Switch off and unplug before adjusting the water level, unless your manual specifies a different procedure.
4. Check the water you use
Water requirements vary between Morphy Richards irons and steam generators.
Your model may specify tap water, a particular blend, or distilled, de-ionised or demineralised water. Use only the water type and proportions stated in your own user manual.
Do not add scented ironing water, perfume, starch or other additives to the tank. These can leave residue and affect performance.
If you have used unsuitable water, follow your model’s care instructions rather than attempting a homemade flushing method.
5. Check whether cleaning is due
Mineral build-up can affect steam flow and contribute to spitting or the release of residue.
Check for cleaning or descaling alerts and follow the maintenance routine specified for your model. This may involve a self-clean function, descaling programme or anti-scale component.
Do not add vinegar, descaling chemicals or other cleaning solutions unless your user manual specifically instructs you to do so.
Allow the appliance to cool as directed before opening a boiler cap or removing an anti-scale component.
