If your Morphy Richards iron or steam generator isn't producing steam, has weak steam output or stops steaming during use, there are several checks that may help restore normal performance.
Common causes include a low water level, incorrect temperature or steam settings, insufficient heating time, automatic shut-off or mineral deposits affecting the steam system.
This guide covers Morphy Richards corded steam irons, cordless steam irons and steam generator irons, including older models.
Handheld garment steamers are not covered, as they operate differently.
1. Iron Heats Up but No Steam Comes Out
If your iron becomes hot but doesn't produce steam, start with the following checks.
Check the Water Tank
- Switch off and unplug the appliance before filling.
- Check that the water tank contains enough water.
- Refill with water suitable for your model, without exceeding the MAX filling mark.
- Close the filling cap securely.
- If the tank is removable, ensure it is correctly fitted.
- Reconnect the appliance and allow it to heat fully before testing the steam.
An empty or incorrectly fitted water tank can prevent steam production even when the appliance heats normally.
Check the Temperature Setting
On steam irons with a traditional temperature dial, continuous steam is generally only available when the soleplate is sufficiently hot.
- Check that the temperature dial is not set to MIN or a low-temperature dry-ironing setting.
- Locate the steam range or steam symbols on the temperature control.
- Select a steam-compatible temperature that is also suitable for the garment.
- Allow the iron to reach the selected temperature.
- Try the steam control again.
Some Morphy Richards irons have automatic temperature control and do not require a traditional temperature setting. These models regulate the temperature automatically.
Important: Always follow the garment's care label. Do not increase the temperature beyond what the fabric permits simply to produce steam.
Check the Steam Control
Depending on your model, steam may be controlled using a slider, dial, button or trigger.
Check that:
- The steam control is not set to OFF or dry ironing.
- A steam level or operating mode has been selected, where applicable.
- The steam trigger is being pressed if your appliance requires one.
- The appliance has reached its normal ready-to-steam condition.
A hot soleplate does not automatically mean steam is switched on.
If your iron heats normally but still produces no steam, continue with the checks below.
2. Steam Generator Heats Up but Won't Produce Steam
Steam generators use a separate base unit to generate or supply steam.
Unlike a conventional steam iron, there may be a short delay between pressing the steam trigger and steam reaching the soleplate.
Check the Water Tank and Base Unit
- Switch off and unplug the steam generator.
- Check the water level and refill if necessary.
- Ensure the detachable water tank, where fitted, is seated securely.
- Check that the filling cap is closed.
- Reconnect the appliance and switch on the steam generator base.
- Select the required steam setting, where applicable.
- Allow the appliance to reach its operating temperature.
If a low-water warning is illuminated, refill the tank before continuing.
Wait Until the Steam Generator Is Ready
Some steam generators have indicators that flash while heating and remain steadily illuminated when ready.
Other models use an indicator that changes colour or switches off.
Wait until the appliance indicates that it is ready before attempting to produce steam.
If your steam generator has separate steam settings, such as ECO or High, ensure a steam mode has been selected.
Check the Steam Trigger
On steam generators that use a trigger:
- Wait until the appliance is ready.
- Press and hold the steam trigger to request continuous steam.
- Allow a short period for steam to travel through the system.
- Release the trigger when steam is no longer required.
A brief delay may be normal, particularly when the appliance has just been switched on or the water tank has been refilled.
Avoid repeatedly pressing the trigger rapidly in an attempt to force steam through the appliance.
Can I Hear the Pump but No Steam Is Coming Out?
Some steam generators make intermittent pumping or humming noises as water moves through the system.
This is generally normal.
If you can hear the pump but no steam is produced:
- Check that the water tank contains enough water.
- Ensure the tank is correctly fitted.
- Allow the appliance to heat fully.
- Check that the correct steam setting has been selected.
- Check for low-water or descaling warnings.
- Ensure the temperature setting, where adjustable, is suitable for steam.
If the pump continues operating unusually loudly or the appliance remains without steam after these checks, further assessment may be required.
Do not dismantle the steam generator or attempt to access its internal pump or boiler.
3. Iron Produces Weak or Very Little Steam
If your iron is producing some steam but considerably less than expected, check the following.
Check the Steam Level
Some irons have adjustable steam output.
Ensure the steam control is set to the required level rather than a low-steam or dry-ironing setting.
If your steam generator has ECO and High settings, ECO may produce less steam than High.
Lower steam output on an energy-saving setting does not necessarily indicate a fault.
Allow the Iron to Recover Between Steam Boosts
Steam boost provides a short burst of steam rather than a continuous flow.
Repeatedly pressing the steam boost button may reduce the strength of subsequent bursts because the appliance needs time to recover.
Allow the iron to return to its normal operating temperature before using steam boost again.
For continuous steaming, use the normal steam control or trigger rather than relying on repeated steam boosts.
Check for Mineral Deposits
Mineral deposits can accumulate inside an iron or steam generator and restrict steam performance.
Possible signs include:
- Steam output gradually becoming weaker.
- Steam releasing unevenly from the soleplate.
- White or brown residue appearing around the steam holes.
- A cleaning or descaling indicator illuminating.
- Steam performance improving temporarily after cleaning.
If these symptoms are present, the appliance may need its normal cleaning or descaling procedure.
See Section 6: Cleaning and Descaling below.
4. Iron Produces Steam Intermittently or Stops During Use
If steam works initially but stops after a short period, this doesn't always indicate a fault.
Check Whether Automatic Shut-Off Has Activated
Some Morphy Richards irons and steam generators have an automatic shut-off feature.
If the appliance has been left inactive, it may stop heating or producing steam.
To check:
- Look for an automatic shut-off or standby indicator.
- Reactivate the appliance using its normal power control or wake-up method.
- Allow it to heat fully.
- Wait until the appliance is ready before trying steam again.
Automatic shut-off times and reactivation controls vary between models.
If the appliance repeatedly switches off during active ironing rather than after a period of inactivity, further investigation may be required.
Check the Water Level Again
Some steam generators continue producing steam briefly after the water level becomes low because a small amount of water remains in the internal system.
Steam may then reduce or stop.
Check for a low-water warning, refill the tank if necessary and allow the appliance to return to its normal operating condition.
Allow the Appliance to Maintain Its Temperature
During ironing, the heating system may switch on and off to maintain the selected temperature.
This is normal.
Steam performance may reduce temporarily if the soleplate or steam system hasn't reached the required temperature.
Wait until the appliance is ready before continuing.
Check for a Cleaning or Descaling Cycle
Some steam generators temporarily suspend steam production while an automatic cleaning or descaling cycle is operating.
If a cleaning indicator is flashing, check whether the appliance is performing its normal maintenance cycle.
Allow the process to complete rather than repeatedly attempting to restart steam production.
5. Cordless Steam Iron Not Producing Steam
Cordless steam irons rely on heat stored in the soleplate while the iron is away from its powered base.
As the iron cools during use, steam production can reduce or stop until it is reheated.
Check the Power Base
- Ensure the base is connected to a working wall socket.
- Check that the mains supply is switched on.
- Place the iron correctly onto its base.
- Allow it to heat until the ready indicator shows that it can be used.
- Lift the iron from the base and try steaming again.
Return the Iron to Its Base Regularly
Unlike a continuously powered corded iron, a cordless iron gradually loses heat when removed from its base.
Return it to the base regularly during ironing to maintain sufficient temperature for steam.
If steam becomes weak after the iron has been away from its base for a period, this may be normal temperature recovery rather than a fault.
Check the Steam and Temperature Controls
- Ensure the water tank contains enough water.
- Select a steam-compatible temperature if your model has an adjustable dial.
- Check that the steam control is switched on.
- Wait for the ready indication before using steam.
- Allow the appliance to reheat between steam boosts.
If your cordless iron heats correctly but still won't produce steam after these checks, mineral deposits or another steam-system issue may be affecting performance.
6. Cleaning and Descaling – Could Limescale Be Blocking the Steam?
Over time, mineral deposits from water can accumulate inside the steam system.
This may affect steam output, cause uneven steaming or lead to residue being released from the soleplate.
Different Morphy Richards irons and steam generators use different cleaning systems, so it's important to identify the cleaning feature fitted to your appliance.
Steam Irons With a Self-Clean Function
Some steam irons have a dedicated Self-Clean or Clean button.
This function is designed to flush mineral deposits from the internal steam chamber.
If your iron has a self-clean function:
- Switch off, unplug and allow the appliance to cool before checking or filling the tank.
- Fill the water tank with the correct water type, without exceeding the MAX mark.
- Identify the dedicated Self-Clean or Clean control.
- Follow the cleaning process designed for that model, including its required temperature, positioning and button operation.
- Allow the appliance to cool before cleaning the soleplate or removing residue.
Important: Self-clean procedures differ between models. Some release hot water and steam through the soleplate, while others use a different cleaning system.
Do not assume that holding a Clean button or operating the iron over a sink is appropriate for every model.
Steam Generators With Calc Clean or Automatic Descaling
Some steam generators have an automatic cleaning programme, a Calc Clean function or a removable anti-scale component.
Depending on the model, cleaning may involve:
- An automatic boiler-flushing cycle.
- A dedicated Calc Clean programme.
- A removable anti-scale component.
- A separate dirty water collection chamber.
If your steam generator displays a descaling warning, complete the cleaning process designed for that appliance.
For example, some models automatically initiate cleaning after a specified amount of water has been used, while others require a dedicated cleaning procedure.
Never open a boiler cap, remove an anti-scale component or empty a dirty water chamber while the appliance is hot or pressurised.
What Should I Avoid When Cleaning or Descaling?
Unless specifically approved for your model, do not:
- Add vinegar to the water tank.
- Use household limescale removers or chemical descalers.
- Pour cleaning solutions directly into the boiler.
- Insert sharp objects into steam holes.
- Attempt to dismantle the appliance.
- Force a cleaning programme by repeatedly switching the appliance on and off.
Using an unsuitable cleaning method may damage the appliance or create a safety risk.

7. What Water Should I Use in My Morphy Richards Iron?
The type of water used can affect steam performance, mineral deposits and the long-term condition of the appliance.
Water requirements vary between Morphy Richards models. There is no single water type or mixture suitable for every iron or steam generator.
Depending on the appliance, the recommended water may be:
- Tap water.
- Plain deionised water.
- Plain distilled water.
- Plain demineralised water.
- A specified mixture of tap water and deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
Some models require a particular mixture, while others recommend using only plain deionised, distilled or demineralised water.
Do not assume that a water recommendation for one Morphy Richards appliance also applies to another model.
Can I Use Scented Ironing Water?
Do not add scented ironing water, perfume, starch, fabric treatments or other additives to the water tank.
These products may leave deposits inside the appliance, restrict steam production or affect internal components.
Can Incorrect Water Cause Reduced Steam?
Yes. Water containing unsuitable minerals or additives may contribute to residue and deposits inside the steam system.
This can lead to:
- Weak or inconsistent steam.
- Blocked steam outlets.
- Brown or discoloured water.
- Residue or marks on clothing.
- Increased cleaning or descaling requirements.
If steam performance has gradually decreased, check the water previously used and complete the appropriate maintenance procedure for your model.
If you're unsure which water your appliance requires, please contact Customer Support with your model number before changing water types.
8. When Is No Steam a Possible Fault?
If your appliance is heating normally but still produces no steam after the relevant checks, further assessment may be required.
Possible indications include:
- No steam despite sufficient water and correct steam settings.
- No steam after the appliance has fully heated.
- A steam trigger or control that does not respond.
- Persistent low-water warnings despite a correctly filled and fitted tank.
- A cleaning or descaling programme that will not complete.
- Steam production repeatedly stopping during normal use.
- Unusual pump operation accompanied by no steam output.
These symptoms do not automatically confirm a manufacturing fault, but they may require further investigation.
Stop using the appliance immediately if you notice smoke, sparking, electrical burning smells, damaged cables, exposed wiring or repeated electrical tripping.
Do not attempt an internal repair.
