If your Morphy Richards iron or steam generator isn’t heating up, start with the checks below. Power settings, automatic shut-off or the appliance not having enough time to warm up can affect whether it is ready to use.
Controls and ready indicators vary between models. Always follow your appliance’s user manual for the correct operating instructions.
1. Check the power supply
- Make sure the plug is securely inserted and the socket is switched on.
- If your appliance has a separate power button, check that it is switched on.
- If there are no lights or signs of power, try another suitable wall socket, provided the appliance, cable and plug appear undamaged.
If you notice cable or plug damage, an electrical burning smell, smoke or sparks, stop using the appliance. Unplug it if safe to do so and contact us before using it again.
2. Check the temperature or operating setting
Irons with adjustable temperatures
Make sure the temperature control is not set to MIN or off, where applicable. Select the setting permitted by the garment manufacturer’s care label.
A lower setting may produce less noticeable heat than a cotton or linen setting. Do not increase the temperature beyond what the garment permits simply to check whether the iron heats up.
Irons with automatic temperature control
Some models do not have a traditional temperature dial. Follow your manual to switch on the appliance and select any required operating mode.
Steam generators
Check that the steam-generator base is switched on and that any required power or mode controls have been selected. Follow the instructions for your particular model.
3. Allow the appliance to warm up
Give the appliance the warm-up time specified in its user manual.
Depending on the model, a ready light may switch on, switch off, change colour or stop flashing. Do not assume that a light going out means the appliance has lost power.
Never touch the soleplate to check its temperature. Use the ready indicators described in your manual.
4. Check whether automatic shut-off has activated
If your model has an automatic shut-off feature, it may stop heating after being left inactive.
Follow your user manual to reactivate the appliance, then allow it to become ready before continuing.
Automatic shut-off instructions differ between models, so avoid repeatedly pressing buttons or switching the appliance on and off.
5. For cordless irons, check the charging base
Cordless irons need to be returned to their base regularly to maintain heat.
- Check that the base is connected to power and switched on.
- Make sure the iron is correctly seated on the base.
- Allow it to reheat as instructed in your manual before continuing.
Follow your model’s ready indicators and guidance on how often to return the iron to its base.
Is the iron heating but not producing steam?
Heating and steam production are separate checks. If the appliance becomes ready but no steam is released, follow our Iron or Steam Generator Not Producing Steam guide.
