If your Morphy Richards Soup Maker won't switch on, has no display lights or powers on but won't start a cooking programme, this guide will help you identify the possible cause and follow the appropriate troubleshooting steps.
Common causes include a loose power connection, incorrectly fitted lid, a programme that hasn't been started, an overfill warning or the appliance's safety protection.
This guide covers models: 48822, 501014, 501020, 501021, 501022, 501025 and 501050.
1. Soup Maker Has No Power or Display Lights
If your Soup Maker has no lights, no display and doesn't respond when connected to the mains, follow these checks.
Check the Wall Socket
- Make sure the wall socket is switched on.
- Test the socket using another suitable electrical appliance.
- If the socket works, try the Soup Maker in another known working wall socket.
- Connect the Soup Maker directly to the wall socket rather than through an extension lead or multi-plug adapter.
If other appliances also fail to work in the socket, the problem may be with the household electrical supply rather than the Soup Maker.
Check the Power Cable
- Switch off the socket and unplug the Soup Maker.
- Inspect the visible cable and plug for damage, fraying, discolouration or signs of overheating.
- If your model has a detachable mains lead, check that it is firmly connected to the Soup Maker's power socket.
- Make sure the plug is fully inserted into the wall socket.
Important: Never use an appliance with a damaged power cable or plug. Do not attempt to repair or replace electrical components yourself.
Check for Moisture Around Electrical Connections
Moisture around electrical connections can interfere with safe operation.
- Unplug the appliance.
- Inspect accessible connections for visible moisture.
- If moisture is present, leave the appliance disconnected until the affected external areas are completely dry.
Never insert objects into electrical sockets or connections, and do not immerse the appliance or its electrical components in water.
If water has entered an electrical component or internal housing, do not reconnect the appliance.
What If There Are Still No Lights?
If the wall socket works, the power cable is securely connected and there are no signs of damage or moisture, but the appliance remains completely unresponsive, it may require further assessment.
Proceed to the Still Need Help? section below.
2. Soup Maker Has Power but Won't Start Cooking
If the display or programme lights illuminate but the appliance won't start, first check that the lid is fitted correctly and that the cooking programme has been started using the correct controls.
Check the Lid Is Correctly Fitted
Soup Makers have safety features designed to prevent operation when the lid is not correctly positioned.
- Switch off and unplug the appliance.
- Allow it to cool if it has recently been used.
- Remove the lid carefully.
- Check for ingredients, food residue or other obstructions preventing the lid from fitting correctly.
- Refit the lid securely in its correct position.
- Reconnect the appliance and try selecting a cooking programme.
Never force the lid, insert objects into the safety mechanism or attempt to bypass a safety interlock.
Check That You've Started the Programme Correctly
On several Morphy Richards Soup Makers, selecting a programme is not the same as starting it.
The programme indicator may illuminate, but the appliance won't begin cooking until the appropriate start control has been pressed.
Model 48822 – Classic Soup Maker
- Fit the lid securely and connect the power cable.
- Switch on the mains supply. The programme icons should flash in sequence.
- Press the Mode button until the required programme is illuminated.
- Press the Select On/Off button to begin.
- The appliance should beep and the cooking countdown should start.
Model 501021 – Compact Soup Maker
- Fit the lid securely and connect the appliance to the mains.
- The programme icons should flash in sequence.
- Press the Mode button to select Smooth or Chunky.
- Press the Start/Stop button to begin cooking.
- The appliance should beep and display the remaining cooking time.
Model 501025 – Perfect Soup Maker with Scales
- Ensure the ingredients and liquid are within the permitted filling levels.
- Fit the lid securely and connect the mains power cable.
- Press the Mode button to select Smooth or Chunky.
- Press the Start/Stop button.
- The appliance should beep and begin its cooking countdown.
Model 501050 – Clarity Soup Maker
- Ensure the lid is correctly fitted.
- Connect the appliance to the mains.
- Use the Mode button to select Smooth or Chunky.
- Press the Start/Stop button to begin cooking.
- The appliance should beep and the countdown should start.
Models 501014, 501020 and 501022
Ensure the lid and any removable cooking vessel are correctly positioned for the selected function. Select the intended cooking programme and use the relevant start or confirmation control on the appliance.
If the programme cannot be started, continue with the checks below.
Is the Appliance Paused or Resting?
Some Soup Makers alternate between heating, blending and resting during a cooking programme.
During a normal resting stage:
- The motor may be silent.
- No blending animation may be displayed.
- The countdown timer continues running.
- The appliance may appear inactive for a short period.
If the countdown continues, the programme may still be operating normally.
Do not repeatedly restart the appliance simply because the blades are not turning continuously.
Check Whether the Programme Has Been Cancelled
On models 501021, 501025 and 501050, holding the Start/Stop button for approximately 2 seconds can cancel an active programme.
If the programme has been cancelled:
- Ensure the appliance is ready to operate.
- Press the Mode button to select the required programme.
- Press Start/Stop to begin again.
For model 48822, select the required programme with the Mode button and press Select On/Off to start.
Do not repeatedly restart a programme if the appliance has stopped unexpectedly or is overheating.
3. Check for an E1 Error or Overfill Warning
If your Soup Maker displays E1, the appliance may have detected that the ingredients or liquid are above the maximum filling level.
On applicable models, the overfill sensor can prevent the blades from operating.
How to Resolve an E1 Error
- Switch off and unplug the Soup Maker.
- Allow it to cool if necessary.
- Remove the lid carefully.
- Check that the ingredients and liquid do not exceed the MAX filling mark.
- Remove some contents if necessary.
- Check the overfill sensor on the lid for food residue.
- Carefully wipe away any residue using a suitable damp cloth, keeping electrical components dry.
- Refit the lid securely.
- Reconnect the appliance and select the required programme.
Also ensure the contents meet the minimum filling level for your model.
If E1 continues to appear after these checks, see our Soup Maker E1 Error Code – Troubleshooting Guide.
4. Soup Maker Stopped Working After Cooking
If your Soup Maker was operating normally but has suddenly stopped responding, it may have become too hot or activated a protective feature.
This can sometimes happen when food burns or sticks to the heated base, when the appliance is used for consecutive cooking cycles without cooling, or when the internal temperature becomes excessive.
Allow the Soup Maker to Cool
- Switch off and unplug the appliance.
- Allow it to cool completely.
- Once cooled, inspect the inside of the jug for burnt-on food or residue.
- If necessary, clean the jug using warm water, washing-up liquid and a suitable non-scratch sponge.
- Ensure the appliance and electrical connections are dry before reconnecting it.
- Check whether the display and controls respond normally.
If the appliance works again after cooling, overheating or thermal protection may have contributed to the interruption. However, this does not confirm the underlying cause.
If the problem happens repeatedly, stop using the appliance rather than continuing to restart it.
For further advice, see:

Can I Use My Soup Maker for Consecutive Cooking Cycles?
Some models require the appliance to cool completely between cooking cycles.
For example, the Compact Soup Maker 501021 instructions specify allowing the appliance to cool completely after a cooking cycle and cleaning it before further use.
Avoid immediately starting another full cooking programme while the appliance remains hot.
5. Soup Maker Display Is Blank, Flashing or Flickering
If the appliance has power but the display behaves unexpectedly, check the following:
- Ensure the mains connection is secure.
- Check that the appliance is not displaying a normal programme-selection or completion indication.
- Confirm whether a cooking countdown appears after the programme is started.
- If the display becomes unresponsive, switch off, unplug and allow the appliance to cool before checking it again.
Programme icons flashing when first connected to the mains can be normal, depending on the model.
However, a display that remains blank, flickers unexpectedly or becomes unresponsive during normal use may require further investigation.
See our Soup Maker Display Blank or Flickering – Troubleshooting Guide.
6. Model-Specific Checks
Model 501014 – Sauté Soup Maker
The 501014 has a separate sauté function with different lid requirements from its normal soup-making programmes.
- For normal soup cooking, ensure the lid is fitted correctly.
- For sauté operation, the lid must be removed.
- The sauté safety plunger should rise when the lid is removed.
- If the plunger is stuck, the sauté function may not operate.
Do not force, dismantle or bypass the safety mechanism.
If normal soup programmes work but sauté does not, see:
Sauté Function Not Working – Model 501014
Model 501020 – Total Control Soup Maker
The 501020 has a removable cooking vessel and different operating requirements for its sauté function.
- Ensure the removable vessel is correctly seated.
- Check that the lid is correctly fitted for the selected programme.
- For sauté operation, the lid must be fitted.
- Removing the lid during sauté pauses heating; refitting it allows the function to continue.
If soup programmes work but sauté does not, see:
Sauté Function Not Working – Model 501020
Model 501021 – Compact Soup Maker
This model has a 1.0L capacity.
- Ensure the contents are between the 800ml minimum and 1.0L maximum filling levels.
- Select the required programme using Mode.
- Press Start/Stop to begin.
- If the programme has been cancelled, select it again and press Start/Stop.
- Allow the appliance to cool completely between cooking cycles.
Model 501025 – Perfect Soup Maker with Scales
The integrated scales and cooking controls perform different functions.
- Ensure the mains cable is connected when you're ready to cook.
- Use the Mode button to select the programme.
- Press Start/Stop to begin cooking.
- Keep the ingredients and liquid within the permitted filling levels.
If the scales work but the cooking display doesn't respond, check the mains power connection. The scales' battery supply does not replace the mains electricity required for cooking.
Model 501050 – Clarity Soup Maker
- Ensure the lid is fitted correctly.
- Select the programme using Mode.
- Press Start/Stop to begin.
- Check that the contents are between the 1.3L minimum and 1.6L maximum filling levels.
- If E1 appears, check the filling level and clean the overfill sensor.
7. When Should I Stop Using My Soup Maker?
Stop using the appliance and disconnect it from the mains, if safe to do so, if you notice:
- A damaged power cable or plug
- Exposed wires or damaged electrical connections
- Smoke, sparking or an unusual electrical burning smell
- Signs of melting or overheating
- Water entering electrical components
- The appliance repeatedly tripping the household electrical supply
Do not attempt to repair the appliance, dismantle electrical components or bypass safety mechanisms.
If the appliance is tripping the electrical supply, see:
