Regular descaling is essential to maintain your Morphy Richards Manual Compact Espresso Machine (172022/172024/172025/172026). It keeps your coffee tasting great, ensures proper steam pressure, and prevents blockages in the system.
Neglecting descaling can lead to:
Reduced coffee temperature
Weak espresso
Low steam pressure or blocked steam wand
Slow water flow
When to Descale
You should descale your machine:
When all lights flash 5 times at start-up (descale reminder)
If coffee flow slows or espresso is weak
Every 2–3 months in hard water areas, even if no warning lights appear
Step-by-Step Descaling Instructions
You will need:
Descaler (follow instructions on the bottle)
Clean jug or bowl
Access to a sink
⚠️ Important: Never use vinegar or harsh chemicals; only use approved descaler to prevent damage.
1️⃣ Prepare the Machine
Turn the espresso machine off and unplug it.
Allow the machine to cool completely.
Remove the water tank (8) and empty any remaining water.
2️⃣ Add Descaler Solution
Dissolve descaler according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Fill the water tank to the MAX line with the solution.
Re-fit the water tank securely on the machine.
3️⃣ Start the Descaling Cycle
Plug the machine back in and press the on/standby button (1).
Wait for the one cup and two cup buttons (2/3) to illuminate solidly.
Place a large jug or bowl under the drip tray to collect descaling water.
Press the two cup button (3) to dispense hot water into the jug/bowl.
Repeat this step 3–4 times, emptying the jug when full.
4️⃣ Clean the Steam Wand
Place the steam wand (12) into a jug or bowl.
Slowly turn the steam control dial (6) to release descaling solution through the wand.
Continue until the water tank is empty.
Empty the jug/bowl as needed during the process.
This step ensures milk residue and limescale in the steam system are removed.
5️⃣ Rinse Thoroughly
Refill the water tank with clean water to the MAX line.
Repeat steps 3–4 to flush out any remaining descaler.
Repeat at least twice to ensure all descaler is removed.
✅ Thorough rinsing is crucial for safe coffee preparation and taste quality.
6️⃣ Reset the Descale Reminder
After descaling is complete, simultaneously press and hold the one cup, two cup, and steam buttons for 3 seconds.
The flashing lights will stop, and your machine is ready for use.
Tips to Avoid Frequent Descaling
Always use filtered or soft water where possible
Empty the water tank after each use
Clean the steam wand and nozzle after every use
Don’t leave coffee grounds in the filter holder when the machine is idle
