If your Morphy Richards Manual Compact Espresso Machine is not dispensing coffee or water, follow the guidance below before contacting Customer Support.
Most dispensing issues are caused by water supply, portafilter blockages, grind size, tamping, priming, or limescale, rather than a product fault.
1️⃣ Check the Water Tank
Symptoms
- No water or coffee dispensed
- Pump noise without flow
Solution
- Ensure the water tank (8) is filled to the MAX line.
- Confirm the tank is correctly seated on the machine.
If the tank has run dry, prime the machine:
- Place the steam wand in a jug or mug
- Turn the steam control dial ON for 30 seconds
- Repeat two more times
Priming removes air from the system and allows the pump to function correctly.
2️⃣ Check the Portafilter (Including Hidden Blockages)
Symptoms
- Machine makes noise but no coffee comes out
- Coffee drips very slowly or unevenly
- Machine beeps but no output
Solution
- Ensure the filter holder (19) is firmly locked into the brewing head (10) at a right angle.
- Use the correct filter:
- Single cup filter (17)
- Double cup filter (18)
🔍 Important: Check for Blockages
- Remove and clean the filter basket thoroughly.
- Carefully inspect the base of the portafilter spout.
- There is a small central outlet hole underneath the portafilter — this can become blocked with coffee oils or fine grounds.
👉 Use a needle or pin to gently clear this hole if blocked.
Even if the filter basket is clean, a blocked outlet hole can completely stop coffee flow. This is one of the most common causes of “no coffee” issues.
3️⃣ Check Coffee Grounds and Tamping
Symptoms
- Slow coffee flow
- Coffee stops mid-pour
Solution
- Use fine espresso grind only.
- Do not overfill — keep coffee slightly below the rim.
- Tamp firmly but not excessively.
- If the grind is too fine or compacted, adjust slightly coarser.
Over-tamping or very fine grind can block water flow completely.
4️⃣ Preheat the Machine
- If the one cup and two cup buttons (2/3) are still pulsing, the machine is not ready.
- Wait until the buttons are solidly illuminated before brewing.
Brewing before full heat can result in weak coffee or no flow.
5️⃣ Descale the Machine
If flow is still slow or inconsistent, limescale may be restricting water movement.
- Perform a full descale cycle.
- Rinse thoroughly afterwards.
- Reset the descale reminder.
Regular descaling ensures proper pressure and flow through the system.
6️⃣ Additional Preventive Tips
- Use filtered or soft water to reduce limescale.
- Clean the filter holder and baskets after every use.
- Regularly check and clean the portafilter outlet hole.
- Clean the steam wand to maintain pressure.
- Avoid leaving the portafilter attached for long periods when not in use.

Q: Coffee stops mid-pour. What should I do?
A: Check grind size, tamping pressure, and ensure the portafilter and outlet hole are clear.
Q: Can I brew immediately after descaling?
A: Yes, once the machine has been fully rinsed and reset.
Q: How can I prevent coffee flow issues in future?
A: Regular cleaning, correct grind size, proper tamping, and routine descaling will prevent most issues.
