If the lever on your Morphy Richards toaster won't stay down, the bread carriage won't lock into position or the lever keeps springing back up, there are several simple checks that may help.
The lever mechanism requires power to operate on most models, and some Morphy Richards toasters have specific instructions for using the left and right bread carriage levers.
Follow the troubleshooting steps below.
Why Won't My Toaster Lever Stay Down?
A toaster lever that won't stay down may be caused by:
- The toaster not being connected to a working power supply.
- Crumbs or trapped food obstructing the bread carriage.
- Bread that is too large or has become lodged inside the slots.
- A model-specific operating requirement.
- An issue with the bread carriage mechanism.
A lever that won't stay down does not automatically mean the toaster is faulty.
Does My Toaster Need to Be Plugged In for the Lever to Stay Down?
Yes. Most Morphy Richards toasters use an electrically operated mechanism to hold the bread carriage down during toasting.
If the toaster is unplugged or the socket is switched off, the lever will generally spring back up rather than remain in position.
To check the power supply:
- Ensure the toaster is plugged directly into a working wall socket.
- Check that the socket is switched on.
- If necessary, check the socket using another appliance.
- With the toaster connected to power, lower the bread carriage lever normally.
If the lever stays down and the toaster begins heating, the appliance is operating as expected.
Do not force the lever or attempt to hold it down manually.
Why Won't the Right-Hand Lever Stay Down on My Illumination Toaster?
On Morphy Richards Illumination 4-slice toasters, models 248020, 248021 and 248022, the right-hand bread carriage lever will only operate when the left-hand lever is in use.
This is an intentional feature of the toaster's design and does not indicate a fault.
How to Use the Illumination Toaster Correctly
When toasting one or two slices:
- Place the bread into the two left-hand slots.
- Lower the left-hand bread carriage lever.
- The toaster will begin toasting.
When toasting three or four slices:
- Place the bread into both the left-hand and right-hand slots.
- Lower the left-hand bread carriage lever first.
- Lower the right-hand bread carriage lever.
- Both sides will operate.
The right-hand lever cannot be used independently of the left-hand lever.
If the right-hand lever springs back up when used on its own, this is normal operation for these models and no further action is necessary.
Can Crumbs or Trapped Bread Prevent the Toaster Lever From Staying Down?
Yes. Food debris or bread becoming trapped inside the toaster may obstruct the movement of the bread carriage.
To check and clean your toaster safely:
- Unplug the toaster and allow it to cool completely.
- Remove and empty the crumb tray.
- Check the bread slots for visible trapped food or accumulated crumbs.
- Gently tap the sides of the toaster to help dislodge loose crumbs.
- If necessary, carefully turn the cooled, unplugged toaster upside down and gently shake out loose debris, as described in your user manual.
- Refit the crumb tray securely before using the toaster again.
Never insert metal utensils into the bread slots, touch the heating elements or attempt to dismantle the appliance.
Avoid forcing oversized bread or other food into the slots, as this may cause it to become trapped.
Once cleaning is complete, reconnect the toaster and check whether the lever operates normally.
What If My Toaster Lever Still Won't Stay Down?
If you've checked the power supply, completed the cleaning instructions and followed any model-specific operating guidance, but the lever still won't stay down, further assessment may be required.
