If your Morphy Richards toaster is burning bread, producing toast that's too light, browning unevenly or popping up before your bread is toasted, there are several possible explanations.
The browning setting, type and thickness of bread, moisture content, positioning and accumulated crumbs can all affect the results.
Differences in toasting results do not necessarily indicate a fault with your toaster. Follow the troubleshooting steps below to help achieve more consistent browning.
Why Is My Toaster Popping Up Too Early or Leaving Bread Too Light?
If your toaster completes its normal toasting cycle but the bread is still too light, the browning setting may be too low for the type of bread you're using.
Try the following:
- Select a slightly higher browning setting.
- Ensure the bread fits comfortably inside the slots.
- Lower the bread carriage lever and allow the toaster to complete its cycle.
- Check the results and adjust the setting gradually until you achieve your preferred level of browning.
The browning control adjusts the length of the toasting cycle. Lower settings produce lighter toast, while higher settings allow more time for browning.
If your toaster completes its cycle normally but the toast is lighter than expected, this does not necessarily indicate a fault.
If the bread carriage lever springs back up immediately, rather than remaining down for a normal toasting cycle, please see My Toaster Lever Won't Stay Down.
Why Is My Toaster Burning My Bread?
If your bread is becoming too dark or burning, several factors may be contributing to the result.
- Browning setting: A setting that's too high may cause the bread to become excessively dark. Reduce the setting and adjust gradually.
- Bread type: Thin, dry or stale bread may brown more quickly than fresh or thicker varieties.
- Consecutive toasting cycles: Residual heat from previous cycles may cause subsequent batches to brown more quickly.
- Crumb and food build-up: Accumulated crumbs or trapped food can become overheated and contribute to localised scorching, burning smells or inconsistent results.
If your toast becomes too dark, reduce the browning setting. You can also press the cancel button to end the toasting cycle early.
If your bread continues to burn despite using a lower setting, check for accumulated crumbs or trapped food before contacting Customer Support.
Why Is One Side of My Toast Darker Than the Other?
Uneven browning can occur when different areas of the bread receive heat differently.
This may happen because:
- The bread is thicker on one side than the other.
- The slice is curved, bent or irregularly shaped.
- The bread is leaning towards one side of the slot.
- Moisture content varies across the slice.
- Food debris is interfering with the bread carriage or positioning.
To improve the results:
- Use evenly sliced bread that fits comfortably inside the toaster.
- Place the bread upright without forcing it into the slots.
- Avoid excessively thick, curved or irregularly shaped slices.
- Check for trapped food or accumulated crumbs.
- Adjust the browning setting to suit the bread.
Slight differences in colour between the two sides or different areas of a slice are normal and do not necessarily indicate a fault.
Does the Type, Thickness or Freshness of Bread Affect Browning?
Yes. Different breads contain varying amounts of moisture and have different textures, densities and thicknesses, all of which affect how quickly they brown.
For example:
- White or thinly sliced bread: May toast more quickly and require a lower setting.
- Wholemeal or seeded bread: Differences in grains, texture and ingredients may affect the final colour.
- Thickly sliced or artisan bread: May take longer to toast, particularly if the slices are unevenly cut.
- Fresh bread: Higher moisture content may produce lighter or less consistent browning.
- Dry or stale bread: May brown more quickly and require a lower setting.
For more consistent results, use slices of a similar thickness and freshness, and adjust the browning setting according to the bread you're toasting.
Never force oversized or excessively thick bread into the slots.
Can Crumbs or Trapped Food Affect Toasting Performance?
Yes. Excessive crumbs and trapped food can contribute to inconsistent toasting results, localised scorching and burning smells.
During normal use, crumbs naturally collect inside the toaster and in the crumb tray. If these are not removed regularly, they can accumulate and become overheated.
Food trapped around the bread carriage may also interfere with its movement or prevent bread from sitting correctly.
How to clean your toaster safely:
- Switch off and unplug the toaster.
- Allow it to cool completely.
- Remove and empty the crumb tray, paying particular attention to accumulated crumbs.
- Check the bread slots for visible trapped food or loose debris.
- Gently tap the sides of the cooled toaster to help dislodge loose crumbs.
- If necessary, carefully turn the unplugged, cooled toaster upside down and gently shake out any remaining loose crumbs.
- Refit the crumb tray securely before using the toaster again.
Never insert metal utensils into the bread slots, touch the heating elements or attempt to dismantle the appliance.
Regularly emptying the crumb tray and removing loose food debris helps prevent build-up and supports safe, consistent toaster operation.
Why Does My Toast Get Darker When Toasting Several Batches?
When toasting several batches consecutively, your toaster retains heat from previous cycles. This can cause subsequent batches to brown more quickly, even when using the same setting.
For more consistent results:
- Wait at least 30 seconds between toasting cycles to allow the browning control to reset.
- Reduce the browning setting slightly if subsequent batches are becoming darker than expected.
- Allow additional cooling time if necessary, particularly after several consecutive cycles.
Some variation between batches is normal and does not necessarily indicate a fault.
Can Frozen Bread Cause Uneven Browning?
Yes. Frozen or partially defrosted bread may brown differently from fresh bread because of its temperature and moisture content.
For more consistent results:
- Use the defrost function, if your toaster includes one.
- Ensure frozen slices are separated before placing them into the slots.
- Avoid forcing frozen or oversized slices into the toaster.
- Adjust the browning setting according to the results.
If your toaster doesn't have a defrost function, allowing bread to thaw before toasting may help achieve more predictable results.
Is It Normal for Toaster Heating Elements to Glow Differently?
Toaster heating elements produce radiant heat, and their appearance may vary during operation.
Some sections may appear brighter than others, and not all heating elements will necessarily glow with the same visible intensity.
Differences in how the heating elements appear do not automatically mean the toaster is faulty.
The most useful way to assess performance is by looking at the toasting results.
If your toaster consistently leaves one entire side of the bread untoasted, or produces extreme differences in browning despite following the troubleshooting guidance, further assessment may be required.
Never touch, adjust or attempt to repair the heating elements.
What If My Toaster Is Still Burning, Under-Toasting or Browning Unevenly?
If you've adjusted the browning setting, tried different bread types, checked for trapped food and cleaned the toaster but are still experiencing significant problems, our Customer Support team can help.
Please contact Morphy Richards Customer Support and provide:
- Model and serial number of your toaster.
- Retailer and date of purchase.
- Proof of purchase, if not already provided.
- Description of the issue, including whether the bread is too light, too dark, browning unevenly or popping up earlier than expected.
- Type and thickness of bread being used, including whether it is fresh or frozen.
- Browning settings selected and whether adjusting them affects the results.
- Whether the issue occurs on the first cycle or during consecutive batches.
- Details of any troubleshooting or cleaning already completed.
- Photographs of the toasted bread, showing both sides of the slices.
- A photograph of the toaster, taken directly above the bread slots so the inside is clearly visible. Please provide this in its current condition, before carrying out any further cleaning.
Ensure the toaster is unplugged and completely cool before taking photographs.
Our team will review the information and advise on the appropriate next steps.
Important: If your toaster produces smoke, sparks, a persistent burning smell or shows signs of electrical damage, stop using it and keep it unplugged.
