If your Morphy Richards kettle won't switch on, has no power or isn't heating, there are a few simple checks you can carry out before assuming the appliance is faulty.
The most common things to check are the power supply, the kettle's position on its base and whether its safety protection has activated.
What Should I Check If My Kettle Has No Power?
Follow these checks in order:
- Check the wall socket. Make sure it's switched on and test it with another appliance to confirm it's working.
- Check the plug and power cable. Ensure the plug is fully inserted and there is no visible damage.
- Check the kettle's position. Switch off the socket, unplug the appliance and reposition the kettle securely on its cordless power base.
- Check the electrical connections. Make sure the kettle and power base are completely dry before use.
- Check the water level. Ensure there is sufficient water between the minimum and maximum filling marks before switching on.
If the socket is working but the kettle remains completely unresponsive, the plug fuse may need checking by someone competent to do so, using the correct fuse rating.
Important: Never use a kettle with a damaged plug, cable or electrical connection. Do not attempt to dismantle or repair the appliance yourself.
Has My Kettle's Boil-Dry Protection Activated?
Morphy Richards kettles have safety protection designed to prevent overheating if the appliance is switched on without sufficient water or allowed to boil dry.
If this protection activates, the kettle may temporarily stop working until it has cooled.
To reset it safely:
- Switch off and unplug the kettle.
- Allow it to cool completely, waiting at least 15 minutes before attempting to use it again.
- Once cooled, refill with fresh water between the minimum and maximum filling marks.
- Place the kettle securely on its base, reconnect the power and try switching it on again.
If the kettle is still hot after 15 minutes, allow additional cooling time before refilling or restarting it.
Never operate your kettle without sufficient water.
Could Limescale Stop My Kettle from Working?
Limescale can affect heating performance and may cause a kettle to switch off before the water reaches boiling point.
However, limescale is more commonly associated with interrupted heating or early shut-off than a complete loss of electrical power.
If your kettle starts heating but switches off unexpectedly, check for mineral deposits and descale it.
Morphy Richards recommends regular descaling, with many kettle manuals specifying approximately once a month, depending on usage and water hardness.
Limescale can develop even in soft-water areas.
